The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE) and the Zambia Environmental Management Agency, with support from the Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation (SPAR6C) Programme, will officially launch Zambia’s national Carbon Registry on 7 August 2026.
The launch marks a historic milestone not just for Zambia, but for the African continent and Least Developed Countries more broadly. By operationalizing the registry, Zambia establishes itself as a global pioneer in climate finance infrastructure, setting a precedent for how developing nations can independently govern, track, and monetize carbon assets under the Paris Agreement. The digital platform is designed as a model of transparency and operational readiness, strengthening the country’s voice in the global green economy.
The registry’s launch reflects sustained progress in building Zambia’s Article 6-aligned carbon market framework:
- Legislative foundation — Enactment of the Green Economy and Climate Change Act (No. 18 of 2024) and the Carbon Market Regulations of 2026, establishing a clear legal environment for international climate investment.
- Bilateral agreements — Article 6 bilateral climate agreements signed with Switzerland, Sweden, and Norway, alongside advanced cooperation with Singapore.
- Project pipeline development — Pilot Article 6 initiatives advanced through the SPAR6C Programme and the Norwegian Article 6 Climate Action (NACA) Fund, demonstrating Zambia’s readiness to generate greenhouse gas emission reductions and Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) across multiple sectors.
About the Launch Event
The event brings together state officials, international cooperating partners, private project developers, and civil society leaders to unveil a platform underpinned by internationally recognised MRV, accounting, and carbon crediting standards — in line with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and Zambia’s national Carbon Market Regulations.
